KIST Medical College and Teaching Hospital is located in Nepal. Precisely located in Lalitpur, Imadol in Kathmandu valley. The college is affiliated by Tribhuvan University's Institute of Medicine (IOM) and not by Kathmandu University as stated by some websites. The entire course (MBBS in Nepal) lasts five and a half years and the complete cost of the program is INR 63,50,00,000 including the tuition fee, hostel fee, and food. KIST is the first medical college in Nepal to be certified for quality by NABH International. This guide is designed for NEET qualified students in India who wish to pursue their MBBS abroad in an English medium in an foreign country at an affordable cost and for parents who want accurate information regarding the fee, eligibility and admission procedure.
KIST Medical College and Teaching Hospital (KISTMCTH) opened in 2006 to train skilled, ethical doctors at an affordable cost. The campus sits 300 meters from Kathmandu's Ring Road. That location keeps students close to city resources while staying away from the noise and pollution of central Kathmandu.
Tribhuvan University's Institute of Medicine (IOM) is the official affiliating body for KIST's MBBS and dental programs. Established in 1959, Tribhuvan University is the oldest and most esteemed public university in Nepal. This KIST Medical College affiliation indicates that the college has an approved curriculum, exam timetable and grading system established by the government rather than the private institution. KIST is also the first private medical college to be opened in the Kathmandu Valley by a Government University.
Affiliation is important but so is accreditation. KIST is the first medical college/ medical teaching hospital in Nepal to get NABH International accreditation. This certification checks clinical protocols, infection control, patient safety, and daily hospital operations. India's National Medical Commission treats this accreditation as a strong signal of training quality for students who plan to return home after graduation.
KIST does not chase flashy numeric rankings, but independent indexes place it firmly among Nepal's strong private medical colleges.
Country Rank
Between 8th and 13th among private medical institutions in Nepal, keeping it inside the country's top ten.
World Rank
Between 15,816 and 22,294 globally in university indexing reports, a range typical for specialized medical schools rather than large multi-discipline universities.
Research Metrics
It is ranked among the top 15-20 research impacting institutions in Nepal as per the criteria of AD Scientific Index.
KIST Medical College offers five academic programs, all taught in English.
The course duration of the MBBS is 54 months which is divided into 4 and a half years of course and 12 months compulsory rotating internship. Graduates do not face delays of recognition later since this length of study corresponds with the minimum requirement laid down by the National Medical Commission in India.
The program of KIST is completed by the IOM curriculum that focuses on the study of basic sciences using an organ-system approach rather than separate subjects. Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology and Pharmacology are taught in systems such as cardiovascular, respiratory, renal etc. This is similar to the way physicians diagnose patients in the clinic.
The module "Sparshanam" is a first year module, which is unique from the usual medical training. Designed to develop empathy and communication skills through art, literature and role-play before contact with a patient. Clinical exposure starts early too: four hours a week from year one, with history-taking practice in year one and physical examination skills in year two.
Progression rules stay strict throughout the program. Students must pass first- and second-year board exams before moving into clinical years. Anyone who fails basic sciences after four attempts gets dismissed from the college.
KIST charges Indian students a flat, all-inclusive MBBS fees in Nepal package of INR 63,50,000 for the entire course. This single number clears up confusion found across other websites: some quote USD 75,000, others list figures between INR 60.5 and 63.5 lakhs. The Medical Education Commission of Nepal sets a fee ceiling of USD 75,000 for foreign seats, but KIST negotiates a lower, fixed package for Indian applicants. The fee covers tuition, university enrollment, hostel accommodation, and mess charges for the full 54-month academic course.
| Payment Stage | Amount (INR) | When It's Due | What It Covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seat Booking | 5,00,000 | Before the MEC admission deadline | Adjusted into the first installment; non-refundable after reservation |
| First Installment | 20,00,000 | At physical admission and enrollment | Admission fees, initial tuition, enrollment, first-year hostel |
| Second Installment | 20,50,000 | Start of second academic year | Tuition, room, and board |
| Third Installment | 18,00,000 | Start of third academic year | Tuition, room, and board |
| Total | 63,50,000 | Paid across three years | Full tuition, hostel, and mess for 54 months |
A few costs sit outside this package. Budget for university exam fees (NPR 10,000-20,000 per exam), mandatory medical insurance (NPR 10,000-15,000 a year), lab coats and dissection kits (INR 25,000-40,000 upfront), books (INR 30,000-50,000 a year), and monthly personal expenses (INR 10,000-15,000). Mess charges can also rise 5% to 8% annually once the first 54 months end.
Indian students need to meet four basic requirements to qualify for KIST Medical College eligibility.
| Criterion | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Academic Record | 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English |
| Minimum Marks | 50% aggregate in PCB, with individual passes in theory and practical |
| Age Limit | At least 17 years old by December 31 of the admission year |
| NEET-UG Score | Qualifying score, roughly the 50th percentile (about 144 marks for general category) |
Most Indian applicants apply through Subcategory II: Foreign NOT to Appear, the NEET route. Here is how it works, step by step:
Keep these documents ready well before the MEC deadline.
| Document | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Class 10 Certificate | Proof of age and name spelling |
| Class 12 Certificate | Verifies PCB marks and individual subject passes |
| Equivalence Certificate | Confirms your Indian board qualification matches Nepalese standards |
| Passport (valid 18+ months) | International registration and border transit |
| NEET Scorecard and Admit Card | Confirms eligibility under the NEET route |
| Medical Fitness Certificate | Confirms fitness, including negative HIV and TB reports |
| Sponsorship Affidavit | Verifies your family can cover tuition and installments |
Carry originals plus four attested photocopies of your academic records. Missing even one document can delay your MEC registration, so start collecting these months before the application window opens.
Indian students at KIST can apply for scholarships backed by the Government of India, though these stay competitive and are never guaranteed.
Mahatma Gandhi Scholarship
Offered to Indian students pursuing professional courses abroad, including medicine.
SAARC Scholarship
Available to students from SAARC member countries studying in fellow member nations like Nepal.
Compex Scholarship
is a joint India-Nepal initiative for education for selected students across border.
Golden Jubilee Scholarship
Linked to National ties between India and Nepal, with an objective of reducing tuition cost for qualified students.
KIST requires all students to live in campus hostels, split completely by gender. Male students cannot enter the female hostel, and the rule works the other way too. Rooms come in twin-sharing or four-seater layouts inside the Integrated Basic Medical Sciences block, each fitted with beds, study desks, closets, and high-speed Wi-Fi. Students who want more comfort can pay extra for air-conditioned rooms.
Food often worries parents the most. KIST Medical College hostel mess serves North Indian staples, rice, dal, roti, and vegetable curries, daily, with South Indian options like dosa and idli on rotation. Each hostel wing also has a small kitchen for students who want to cook their own meals, plus laundry facilities with washing machines.
KIST has a Zero Tolerance Policy on ragging and bullying and student will be suspended/expelled for the violation of this policy. The surrounding neighborhood, Imadol, remains quiet and residential with moderate to high safety ratings, and students walk and commute there without problem.
Getting there is simple for North Indian families. KIST is 260 kms far from Raxaul border and 265 kms from Sonauli, both roads can be taken. Tribhuvan International Airport offers daily direct flights to Delhi and Mumbai for those who prefer air travel.
Passing a licensing exam after graduation matters more than the degree itself. Nepal holds one of the highest FMGE pass rate figures globally, between 30% and 34.5% nationally, well above medical education hubs like China, Russia, or Ukraine. KIST itself has reported 100% pass rates in some NBEMS cycles, but check the fine print: that figure often reflects a tiny cohort, sometimes just two students appearing and two passing.
The strong performance ties back to curriculum overlap. KIST teaches from standard English textbooks nearly identical to those used in Indian medical colleges, so students prepare for FMGE and the upcoming NExT exam naturally, without needing separate coaching.
Graduates are not limited to India either. KIST appears in the World Directory of Medical Schools and carries ECFMG verification, so students can sit for the USMLE, with roughly a 10% US residency match rate and average resident salaries between USD 60,000 and 70,000. Others pursue PLAB and UK registration, with close to a 70% success rate for well-prepared candidates entering NHS foundation training.
NABH International accreditation, unmatched by most private colleges in Nepal
Fixed, all-inclusive fee with no hidden charges
Curriculum and disease patterns nearly identical to India, easing FMGE prep
English medium instruction, no language barrier
Road access from Bihar, UP, and West Bengal, no flight required
Strict progression rules, four attempts maximum on basic sciences.
MEC seat matching can take two to three weeks.
Fewer super-specialty cases compared to large government hospitals in India.
