Yes, a KMC degree is valid for practicing medicine in India. KMC meets every requirement under India's FMGL Regulations 2021, the rulebook that decides whether a foreign medical degree counts back home.
Rule 5 of these regulations says a foreign degree only counts if the graduate can get a license to practice in that country on the same terms as a local citizen. In 2023, this one single rule has caused a lot of panic. A notice in Nepal's official gazette hinted that foreign graduates might only get temporary registration, not a full license. Some families pulled their children out mid-course over the scare.
The Nepal Medical Council closed this gap for good. On November 10, 2024, it published a clear notice which reads:
Foreign MBBS/BDS students are granted provisional registration as Nepalese students are granted during their one-year internships.
Foreign students can take Nepal's national licensing examination after completion of internship.
Passing that exam gives a license equal to a Nepalese citizen's license.
No "good standing certificate" from India is needed to get this license.

Kathmandu Medical College runs on a two-campus system. Each campus serves a different stage of the MBBS in Nepal course.
This campus sits in Bhaktapur, away from the city's noise. Students study Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, and Community Medicine here. The campus has lecture halls, labs, a dissection hall with a working cadaver bank, and a medical library.
From the third year, students move to Sinamangal in Kathmandu city. This campus connects directly to KMCTH, a 900-bed teaching hospital near Tribhuvan International Airport.
KMC provides separate, supervised hostels for male and female students.
Boys' hostel
Located at Duwakot, houses up to 400 students, with an attached cafeteria serving vegetarian and non-vegetarian food.
Girls' hostels
Two hostels at Sinamangal, both within walking distance of the teaching hospital, supervised by resident wardens.
Fee information for KMC varies widely online, and most of it is wrong. Some sites list the total cost as low as Rs.24 lakh, a figure that reflects subsidized local seats, not international fees. Others multiply an annual figure incorrectly and land on Rs.3.3 crore, which is not accurate either.
The real, government-regulated total fee for Indian and international students is USD 75,000, close to Rs.57 to Rs.62 lakh at current exchange rates. Nepal's Medical Education Commission requires this amount to be paid in three fixed installments, not upfront, and not through private agents.
| Payment Stage | Core Tuition (INR) | Extra One-Time Charges | Total for This Phase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phase I: At admission | Rs.26,00,000 | Rs.3,00,000 admission fee, Rs.23,500 university registration, Rs.62,000 KU affiliation, Rs.3,200 NMC registration, Rs.5,000 MEC form fee | About Rs.29,93,700 |
| Phase II: By August 2027 | Rs.22,00,000 | University exam fees, as billed | Rs.22,00,000 and up |
| Phase III: By August 2028 | Rs.9,00,000 to Rs.14,00,000 | University exam fees, as billed | Rs.9,00,000 to Rs.14,00,000 |
| Grand Total | Rs.57,00,000 to Rs.62,00,000 | Hostel and living costs not included | Rs.57,00,000 to Rs.62,00,000 |
A few extra costs come up outside this main schedule. A failed university exam adds a re-exam fee of about Rs.9,400 to Rs.14,500 per paper. Health insurance inside Nepal runs Rs.5,000 to Rs.10,000 a year. First-year students also spend roughly Rs.25,000 to Rs.37,500 on books, a dissection kit, and lab coats.
Daily living costs in Kathmandu stay well below what most European study destinations charge.
| Expense | Monthly (INR) | Annual (INR) |
|---|---|---|
| Hostel rent (double sharing) | Rs.12,000 to Rs.17,500 | Rs.1,44,000 to Rs.2,10,000 |
| Mess and cafeteria food | Rs.5,000 to Rs.5,500 | Rs.60,000 to Rs.66,000 |

| Personal and miscellaneous | Rs.3,000 to Rs.5,000 | Rs.36,000 to Rs.60,000 |
| Total | Rs.23,500 to Rs.33,500 | Rs.2,82,000 to Rs.4,02,000 |
Indian students must meet these conditions before applying:
All medical admissions in Nepal run through the Medical Education Commission (MEC), a government body that removes private negotiation from the process. No student gets a seat through a direct college deal.
Applicants choose between two subcategories when registering on the MEC portal:
| Subcategory | How It Works | Seat Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Subcategory I | Student sits for Nepal's MECEE-BL entrance exam in person | Gets matched first, wider college choice |
| Subcategory II | Student applies using their NEET-UG score, skips MECEE-BL | Matched only after Subcategory I students are placed |
MECEE-BL Exam Format (for Subcategory I applicants):
| Component | Detail |
|---|---|
| Question format | 200 multiple choice questions |
| Duration | 3 hours |
| Marking | +1 for correct, -0.25 for wrong |
| Qualifying score | 50th percentile |
| Biology | 80 marks |
| Chemistry | 50 marks |
| Physics | 50 marks |
| Mental ability | 20 marks |
Claims of "100% scholarships" or full fee waivers from consultants are not accurate. Nepal's government does not offer free MBBS seats to foreign students, and no legitimate channel bypasses this rule.
Real fee reductions come through two paths only. Students with top ranks in the MECEE-BL exam, or outstanding university exam results, may get a partial waiver of 10 to 25 percent on tuition. Separately, students facing genuine financial hardship can apply for a need-based concession, reviewed case by case by the Kathmandu University Dean's office.
